Pattern Review | Patons 0023 ‘Motif Top’ Oversize Crochet Tee

This pattern is for an oversize tee in one size only (one size fits most). It is labeled Easy Crochet but is an exciting challenge for anyone with little to no experience reading and following patterns. The pattern utilises several fancy stitches (Popcorn and Picot – instructions are included) in addition to the double and treble crochets, as well as some decreasing at the neck line. The garment is constructed in sections (referred to as panels in the pattern), and a helpful diagram to illustrate this is included.

This pattern was one of the first I ever attempted after first learning to crochet. I found it a challenge and thoroughly enjoyed learning to create fancy stitches, as well as making the switch from working in the round (the motifs) to working in rows (the panels). At the time I don’t recall finding any mistakes in the written instructions, but it is absolutely worth pointing out that the pattern is written in UK/Australian crochet terminology, rather than the more common US terminology. If Patons ever reads this review, then please please please put this notification on the front of the pattern in BOLD font! Fortunately I had already learned the hard way to check the terminology of patterns, but other beginners might not realise and end up disappointed.

I made my Motif Top in Patons Cotton Blend 8 ply in Natural (04), exactly as per the instructions. This yarn is always delightful to work with and produced excellent results. At the time if felt as though it took me forever to complete this project… it would have been several weeks, I’m sure. How much this is due to my early crochet technique versus the enormous size of the finished garment is hard to judge… however, I plan to make this again in a darker colour, either dark grey, brown or (shudder!) black and can compare crochet time then. The pattern says the finished garment should measure 72cm across the back (width) and 70cm in length. I haven’t actually measured my finished top before, but here goes… okay, mine measures 76cm wide and 76 cm in length. I’ve been wearing and washing it for about 5 months now so some of those extra centimetres could be due to normal wear and tear.

Speaking of wearing this top, it is fabulous over jeans and a long sleeve black tee in the winter. I always get compliments when I wear it and I admit I love the looks I get when I explain that I crocheted it! The other stand out for this top is the weight – it is heavy and drapes beautifully. I’ve been hanging mine in the wardrobe when not wearing it, but I can see that this could warp the shape of the garment over time so I will start folding it instead. And it probably goes without saying but wash on a gently setting in a wash bag, and dry flat in the shade after reshaping… don’t tumble dry this beauty!
