Pattern + Tutorial | Simple Spirals Coasters

August 31, 2018 by Beth Leave a Comment

This tutorial will teach you how to crochet Simple Spirals to create a set of coasters 🍭. This project does not rely on having a particular gauge or tension, so it’s perfect for beginners. However, if you know you tend to crochet more tightly or loosely, you might like to go up or down a hook size so that your stitches are even.

Before you begin, you will need:

  • 5mm (US/UK 7) crochet hook
  • 8ply or DK weight yarn in 3 colours of your choice for the swirls
  • 8ply or DK weight yarn in background colour
  • locking stitch holders
  • yarn or wool needle
  • scissors or thread cutter

This project is written in US crochet terminology.

  • col 1    spiral colour 1
  • col 2    spiral colour 2
  • col 3    spiral colour 3
  • bkgr    background colour
  • sp        space
  • slst       slipstitch
  • st/s      stitch/es
  • rep      repeat
  • sk         skip

Part 1 | Crochet the Simple Spiral

Option 1: Magic Ring
(col 1) Starting with a magic ring, slst into the ring to form a starting loop.
Sc 2, 1 dc, 1 tr. Keep the magic ring loose for now.
Add a stitch holder to col 1. (4 stitches)

Option 2: Starting Chain
(col 1) Chain 4 and slst into first ch to form a ring.
Sc 2, 1 dc, 1 tr into chain ring.
Add a stitch holder to col 1. (4 stitches)

Start with magic ring, colour 1 (lime green).

Round 1. (col 2) Join to magic ring/chain ring with a slst and then sc 2, 1 dc, 1 tr. Add a stitch holder to col 2. (8 stitches). (col 3) Join to magic ring/chain ring with a slst, sc 2, 1 dc, 1 tr. (12 stitches)

Round 1, colour 2 (teal).
Round 1, colour 3 (pink).

Round 2. Continue with col 3. (2 dc in next st) rep 4 times. Col 1 (2 dc in next st) rep 4 times. Col 2 (2 dc in next st) rep 4 times. (24 stitches)

Round 2, continue with col 3 (pink).
Round 2, continue with colour 1 (lime green).
Round 2, continue with colour 2 (teal).
Spiral at the end of Round 2. Total of 24 stitches.

Round 3. Continue with col 2. (2 dc in next st, 1 dc) rep 4 times. Col 3 (2 dc in next st, 1 dc) rep 4 times. Col 1 (2 dc in next st, 1 dc) rep 4 times. (36 stitches).

Round 3, continue with colour 2 (teal).
Round 3, continue with colour 3 (pink).
Round 3, continue with colour 1 (lime green).

Round 4. Continue with col 1. [2 dc in next st, 1 dc, (2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc) rep, 2 sc in next st, sc2, slst in next st]. Col 2 rep [ ]. Col 3 rep [ ]. (48 stitches in total)

Round 4, continue with colour 1 (lime green).
Round 4, continue with colour 2 (teal).
Round 4, finish with colour 3 (pink) and fasten off.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

You may like to make 2, 4 or 6 coasters, or more, so before continuing with this section, crochet the number of simple spirals to match the number of coasters you plan to make.

Round 5. (bkgr col) Join yarn with a slst to any one of the outside sts. Ch 2, dc in same st, *2 dc in next st, dc2. Rep from * to end. Join with a slst to the 1st dc at the beginning of the round. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 5, completed coaster!

Ta da! You have a beautiful coaster!

Repeat Round 5 for each of your spirals until you have a full set of coasters. Give them as a gift in a box (this link is a great tutorial on how to do that using 6” x 6” scrapbook paper or card: https://damasklove.com/easy-like-sunday-morning-6/) or keep them for yourself!

You can make these coasters in any colour combination you like (red, green and white at Christmas, for example), and consider mixing your 3 spiral colours and your background colour around in the pattern to create variety.

Once you gain confidence, you might even like to play around with a more decorative edging, such as picots, fans or shells. The decorative borders used for the Simple Spiral Baby Blanket (see this blog post) might be helpful!
